Insomnia and Depression Talk and Book Signing

Insomnia and depression are two of the most common problems that affect students. Often first manifesting in college due to increased stress levels, both conditions can last a lifetime. Dr. Siegfried Haug and long-time Montague Bookmill owner David Lovelace discuss how insomnia and depression have impacted their lives, and the different approaches they have taken to overcome these issues.

In his book I Want to Sleep, Dr. Haug presents the idea that insomnia is not necessarily caused by stressful circumstances, but by how we handle the situation. During the day, we may forge ahead using pressure. For sleeping at night, however, this proves to be the most counterproductive approach of all. If you habitually force performance by scaring yourself, your insomnia might well be a needed wake-up call. Dr. Haug uses case studies and step-by-step guidance to illustrate how to embrace sleep rather than fight sleeplessness. I Want to Sleep is an invitation to make peace with sleep rather than war on insomnia.

Recently featured on NPR's Talk of the Nation radio program, David Lovelace's book Scattershot gives an intimate look at how depression and bipolar disorder can affect an entire family. Depression struck during college, but Mr. Lovelace felt undeserving of the help available from his college's health center. His memoir relates the despair that often accompanies these afflictions, and which caused him to flee from treatment and his family in an effort to leave his problems behind. Currently stable, the author hopes Scattershot will help students avoid the denial, confusion, and pain that these conditions can bring with them.
