What's Trump: Race, Class, Gender and the 2008 Election

Dr. Julianne Malveaux, President of Bennett College for Women will be speaking at the University of Massachusetts Amherst on Monday, September 29, 2008 at 4:00 p.m.in the Bernie Dallas Room in Goodell at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

The title of the lecture is “What’s Trump: Race, Class, Gender and the 2008 Election” and is being sponsored by Women’s Studies and the College of Humanities and Fine Arts. The program is free and open to all. A reception will follow the talk.

Described by Dr. Cornel West as “the most iconoclastic public intellectual in the country,” President Malveaux is an exemplary scholar and civic leader. A syndicated columnist, her writing appears regularly in newspapers including the San Francisco Examiner, USA Today, the Los Angeles Times, the Detroit Free Press, and periodicals such as Black Issues in Higher Education, Ms. Magazine, Essence, and The Progressive. In addition she regularly appears on CNN, BET and on Evening Exchange (Howard University Television.) She has appeared on PBS’s To The Contrary, ABC’s Politically Incorrect, Fox News The O’Reilly Factor and on C-SPAN, MSNBC and CNBC. Dr. Malveaux has hosted talk radio programs in Washington, San Francisco, and New York.

Dr. Malveaux has also published a number of books. She is co-author of Unfinished Business: The 10 Most Important Issues Women Face Today (2002), co-editor of The Paradox of Loyalty: An African American Response to the War on Terrorism (2002), editor of Voices of Vision: African American Women on the Issues (1996); co-editor of Slipping Through the Cracks: The Status of Black Women (1986). Her columns have been collected in two editions: Sex, Lies, and Stereotypes: Perspectives of A Mad Economist (1994), Wall Street, Main Street, and the Side Street: A Mad Economist Takes a Stroll (1999).

A committed activist and civic leader, Dr. Malveaux serves on the boards of the Economic Policy Institute, The Recreation Wish List Committee of Washington, DC, and the Liberian Education Trust. “We are excited to have President Malveaux on our campus and hear her insights on this election. Her visit will also further our collaboration with Bennett College for Women” said Arlene Avakian, director, Women’s Studies program.

Directions & Parking

Goodell is located west of the campus pond and Old Chapel, and is easily identified by its portico with four white columns at the entrance. Public parking is available in the Campus Center parking garage or in Lot 32 across Mass. Ave. Handicapped parking is located on the north side of the building on Hicks Way.
