UMass Public Archaeology Lab at Historic Deerfield
Come visit UMass archaeologists and field school students as we research and identify artifacts at our lab in the Moors House at Historic Deerfield. Open to the general public July 24-August 9, Thursday-Saturday, 9:30-12:00 and 1:00-3:30.
The 2008 UMass Archaeological Field School is focused on an archaeological site in the Deerfield area in order to learn more about pre- and post-Contact Native American lifeways and history. As part of an on-going community-based archaeology project we are welcoming the public to our laboratory in Historic Deerfield to learn more about the full scope of archaeology from researching Euro-American colonization and New England Native history to archaeological survey techniques, excavation methods, laboratory methods, artifact analysis, archaeological interpretation, site protection and community-based archaeology.
When you stop by the lab you'll meet archaeologists and field school students who are actively engaged in artifact analysis and the curation of artifacts and ecofacts found in the field by students participating in the 2008 UMass Field School in Deerfield.
Have you ever wondered what archaeology is really like? The lab is a great place for adults and children to visit to learn about archaeology in general and to see the actual artifacts that students are finding throughout the field school.
