Sound Advice
While hearing loss used to be mostly a concern of aging adults, music induced hearing loss is creating issues for children and teens as well. Approximately 5.2 million children age 6-19 suffer from some degree of noise-induced hearing loss. The volume at which individuals typically listen to music, whether it be through headphones or at concerts, is killing the hair cells in the ears, causing hearing loss. Warning signs of hearing loss include ringing in the ears and distortion of sound.
It is important to become more aware of one's risks of music induced hearing loss. The Department of Communication Disorders at UMass will be holding a free event entitled "Sound Advice." Join us to get your hearing tested, see how the typical volume of your iPod is affecting your hearing future, and learn about ways to preserve your hearing.
Appointments can be made for hearing tests through the event's email.
