Lynn Margulis: Luminous Fish: Tales of Science and Love

Lynn Margulis, Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Geosciences, will read passages from her newest book, Luminous Fish: Tales of Science and Love.

A renowned biologist and champion of the Gaia theory, Margulis was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1983 and received the National Medal of Science in 2000 from President Clinton.

An author, editor or co-author of chapters in some 40 previous books, Margulis has also published articles in Natural History, Nature, and Scientific American. The book Environmental Evolution, published in 2000 and co-edited with Clifford Matthews and Aaron Haselton, was praised by Quarterly Review of Biology as “clearly written, well illustrated, and a pleasure to read.” Margulis has also co-written both articles and books with her son, Dorion Sagan.

Luminous Fish, published by the independent press Chelsea Green, is the first fiction work by Margulis. The short stories follow the professional and romantic lives of several scientists.

The title appears under the Sciencewriters Books imprint. Chelsea Green, operating out of White River Junction, Vt., launched the imprint last fall “to develop outstanding works of science for the general public.” Sciencewriters Books, under the co-directorship of Margulis and Sagan, blends “exciting writing with depth of knowledge and dedication to scientific integrity.” Their intent is to publish “new and established authors on cutting-edge topics that are key to our survival.”

Margulis will also be available after the presentation to sign copies of Luminous Fish and some of her previous publications.

The reading is sponsored by the University Store.
