Seekonk Post Office to Be Dedicated to Former UMass Amherst Student Killed in Iraq

June 24, 2009

AMHERST, Mass. – The post office in Seekonk, Mass., will be dedicated Sunday, June 28 in memory of former UMass Amherst student and Seekonk resident Eric Paul Valdepenas, a U.S. Marine Lance Corporal who died in combat in Iraq in 2006.

The public is invited to attend the ceremony at 2 p.m. at the post office located at 156 Taunton Ave. in Seekonk. RSVP by June 25 by calling 401/276-6981.

In 2007, UMass Amherst Isenberg School of Management alumnus J. Brian Palmer ’95 and Eric’s sister, Karen Valdepenas Ing, created the Lance Corporal Eric Paul Valdepenas Scholarship. The endowed scholarship is given annually to an Isenberg School student who is a U.S. citizen and an active participant in the community. The student must also demonstrate good character and financial need.

“We hope that the scholarship will serve as a reminder to all of us of Eric’s courage and sacrifice,” observes Palmer. “We should never forget that our freedoms are not free.”
