‘Romeo and Juliet’ comes to Bowker Auditorium
The American Shakespeare Center’s “Rough, Rude, and Boisterous Tour,” will perform “Romeo and Juliet” on Tuesday, Nov. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Bowker Auditorium. There will be a talk prior to the performance by Arthur Kinney, director of the Renaissance Center, from 6:30-7:30 p.m.
Romeo will be played by Josh Carpenter and Juliet by Brandi Rhome. According to artistic director Jim Warren, “We hope you let us take you on this ride and let the language envelope you in the love, the friendship, the humor, the rage, the ache, the fun that make this play as exciting and relevant today as it was 400 years ago.”
The American Shakespeare Center recovers the accessibility of Shakespeare’s theatre by giving modern audiences the experience of an Elizabethan playgoer with universal lighting, doubling of parts, minimal sets, familiar costumes and music.
“Romeo and Juliet” is the story of a summer in Verona enflaming the old feud between the Capulet and Montague families. As the tension builds in the streets, two teenagers fall in love at first sight. Married in secret, they hope for reconciliation between their families. When short tempers lead to deadly consequences, the young lovers find themselves alone and on the run from their families. What starts as a bawdy teenage comedy transforms into a romance.
The production is co-sponsored by the Massachusetts Center for Renaissance Studies.
Tickets are $20 for the public, and $10 for youth 17 and under and Five College students.
Tickets are available at the Fine Art Center Box Office, or call 545-2511.
