Patrick signs $2.2b higher education bond bill

A $2.2 billion bond bill intended to fund new construction and repair older buildings on the state’s 29 public campuses during the next decade was signed Aug. 7 by Gov. Deval L. Patrick.

Approved by lawmakers last week, the bill will provide $1 billion to the University system and $1.2 to state and community colleges.

“This legislation represents an important investment in the future of our Commonwealth and in the future of our students,” Patrick said in a statement.

Patrick said state capital investments in the campuses will rise from about $120 million a year to $200 million a year by 2012, or 10 percent of all state borrowing by that time.

The bill contains $290 million for the Amherst campus, including $100 million for a new science building and $85 million for a classroom building. Also included is $41.2 million for repairs to the Lederle Graduate Research Center, $51.3 million for repairs to the Morrill Science Center and $12.6 million for repairs to Machmer Hall.
