Carolyn Mae Lassiter was raised in Ahoskie, North Carolina where her family worked as sharecroppers until she was twelve years old. Picking cotton, tobacco and peanuts alongside her family, she spent little time in school. Carolyn developed her interest in art during the early 1970's when she lived in Mexico with a family of indigenous artists. A self-taught artist, she began drawing in 1989. Her artwork is critically acclaimed at shows internationally. Carolyn's work includes various types of multi-media art inspired by dreams, spirituality, life in the country, family, and animals.
In his portrayals, each installation combines reclaimable material (steel, wood, glass, sand)
and sets the model of the figure in the representation of the landscape.

Reading from his most recent book of poetry, this Professor Emeritus and former Director of the Fine Arts Center at the University of Massachusetts brings us reflections and a celebration for those meaningful moments in life. Dr. Tillis, a native of Galveston, Texas is an accomplished poet, composer, saxophonist, professor, and administrator. He has published numerous books of poetry; and his music catalog is extensive, including more than 125 compositions and commissions, spanning both jazz and classical European traditions in various media - orchestral, jazz, instrumental, choral, chamber music, and vocal works.
Composed of the country's leading symphonic virtuosos and led by the electrifying conductor and violinist Vladimir Spivakov, the National Philharmonic of Russia has quickly established itself as the finest and most exciting orchestra to emerge from Russia in many years.

Acting like a Minga—a term used in the Andes of Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia to mean a community that comes together to undertake needed actions, such as the building of new roads, a school or a home—the artists are pursuing communal projects that they hope will provide them with new insights and ways to interact with the local communities in which they live and work.
A solo exhibition of recent works by Yusef Lateef. Lateef's trees, created in the last two years since his retirement from the University of Massachusetts Amherst are far from conventional, as one might expect, giving us yet another glimpse into his fully engaged life.

A Native American adaptation of the highly successful British play Tir na N’og by Greg Banks (who directs this version), this heart-warming adventure story explores the value of tradition, culture and family in a contemporary framework.
By promoting the exchange of artistic ideas and expressions, the artists write, we can encourage [an] understanding of our varied backgrounds and creative methods.
About their work, the artists write, “To look after, to care for, to protect, to tend, to nurture, to soothe, to heal, to teach. In our project, the intimacy, attachment and routine of motherhood was investigated [in order] to develop a collaborative grouping of artwork, similar to a cerebral collage by three artists from different cultural backgrounds.
About their project, the artists write, There is a native American expression, ‘Mitakuye Oasin.’ In the language of the Lakota Sioux it means ‘we are all related.’
Under the direction of cellist Yuri Turovsky, I Musici de Montréal has been celebrated throughout the world for its laser-like precision, cohesion, expressiveness, assurance, and compelling flair. This installation deals with memories, and their gradual transition from "cold storage" into our
present experience.
Cue the James Bond theme music (the old James Bond as in Sean Connery); now imagine four international hot spots that are full of intrigue, romance and yes, perhaps a little danger. Now imagine visiting them all in the course of one evening. Disco in Casablanca, tango in Buenos Aires, karaoke in Tokyo and Celtic music in a London pub—it’s the Friends of the Fine Arts Center’s Annual Benefit Gala and Auction at the Hotel Northampton, Saturday, January 31st, 6:30 PM to 11:30 PM. It’s a gala evening that is full of great entertainment, food, and auction items donated by local businesses.
Five thousand years and over three million square miles of Chinese culture are explored in this dance production full of movement and color.
In conjunction with the Visiting Writers Series the University Gallery presents Franz Wright.

This classic musical romance, directed by Henri Barakat, stars the legendary Adel Halim Hafez, one of Egypt and the Arab world’s most enduringly popular singers who also appeared in sixteen feature films.
Karen Dolmanisth's time-based installation is well suited to its location on the Umass campus pond's "Isle of View". Her accumulative and performance-based modes of thinking create a ritual in progress, as the artist continues to add to the installation over the course of one week this fall. South African poet and performer Khadija Tracey Heeger teams up with musicians from Western Massachusetts to create a new soundscape with spoken word. Khadija's words resonate with the earth and her poems fearlessly address questions of identity and the complexities of living in her own skin, in the New South Africa, and in the world. Stone Words gives us a remarkable lens through which to see the parallel landscape of our country, our time and, ultimately, ourselves.

| What is a sixteen foot piñata wall doing on the U-Mass campus? Artist Josiah Cuneo combines both visual art and music composition in presenting his latest installation Four Songs for my Countrymen. Through the use of his inventive visual vocabulary and conceptually driven musical scores, Cuneo addresses crucial topics ranging from Mexican immigration to U.S oil trade. The result is work that intelligently tackles delicate issues using a language that is personal and imaginative.
He’s got multiple heads, an enormous nose and a great sense of humor – but don’t run and hide! It’s just Michael Cooper with a wonderfully entertaining performance for the whole family. Tales of heart and truth relevant to audiences of all ages. SOLD OUT

Reading from his most recent book of poetry, this Professor Emeritus and former Director of the Fine Arts Center at the University of Massachusetts brings us reflections and a celebration for those meaningful moments in life. Dr. Tillis, a native of Galveston, Texas is an accomplished poet, composer, saxophonist, professor, and administrator. He has published numerous books of poetry; and his music catalog is extensive, including more than 125 compositions and commissions, spanning both jazz and classical European traditions in various media - orchestral, jazz, instrumental, choral, chamber music, and vocal works.

Celebrated poet/activist Suheir Hammad’s new multimedia performance, based on her latest work, the breaking poems. Three distinctly powerful texts focus on topics of dislocation from Palestine to Brooklyn, New Orleans to Iraq, and back again. Created in collaboration with media artist Waleed Zaiter.
A showcase of excerpts by activist/artists taking on important contemporary issues in a variety of aesthetics, from spoken word to interview theater. Host Kristina Wong introduces work excerpts by D’Lo (Ramble-ations), Lenelle Moïse (Womb-Words, Thirsting), Jerry Quickly (Un-Embedded) and Jose Torres Tama (Cone of Uncertainty).

This year's conference takes a global look at art and activism, emerging aesthetics, and the role of performance in cultural organizing. Conference events include panels and symposia, artist conversations, workshops and performances.
New WORLD Theater’s youth troupe, Project 2050, looks at global and personal revolutions in a high-energy hip-hop performance blending spoken word, breaking, stepping and video storytelling.
Bright Promises is an exploration in mixed media collage. Baltzell's previously worked primarily in oils which lends itself to the multiple transparent layers that make up her surfaces. That technique is extended into her new collage work, to which she adds ephemera, both text and images.

Paying homage to the Dead’s legendary sound with the Dark Star Orchestra, performing Grateful Dead classics in the same way that an orchestra interprets music of classical composers.
The Peace Art Film Collective c/o UMass Communication classes 493B/693B and the Asian Arts and Culture Program is soliciting submissions for a curated showcase of short film/video by local youth promoting peace. All approaches to representing peace through the medium of film/video (narrative, experimental, documentary, etc.) are welcome.
Paying homage to the Dead’s legendary sound, a roster of acclaimed artists including Ollabelle, Larry Campbell, Theresa Williams, Jim Lauderdale and Catherine Russell come together to recreate and perform songs from Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty.
With their usual flair for zaniness and whacky comedy, combined with supercool moves and references to science and astronomy, Chaos Theory Dance will once again visit the University Gallery, in Paper Dances: Text Your Eyes.
Sponsored by the Five College Multicultural Theater Committee and New WORLD Theater, this workshop introduces the the short forms of Playback Theater such as fluid sculpture, chorus, pairs, and four-part stories. This workshop is in conjuction with the 2007-2008 WORD Festival.
