Sports Nutrition and Fitness

  • The Presidents Council on Fitness and Sports http://www.fitness.gov/ Provides information on the importance of exercise and gives ideas as to how to include exercise in your life. Content is applicable to all ages. Provides fact sheets for nutrition professionals, coaches, parents and fitness experts. Follows the American Dietetic Association’s Position Paper on sports nutrition.
  • American Council on Exercise (ACE) http://www.acefitness.org Majority of the website is geared towards trainers or those seeking to be ACE certified. The website does, however, provide good sports nutrition and fitness information that is specific to age and medical conditions.
  • The Physician and Sports Medicine www.physsportsmed.com Provides information on sports medicine and injury prevention for athletes. Also provides free handouts on a variety of topics such as sports nutrition, obesity, chronic disease and women’s health and nutrition.
  • American Heart Association http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=1200013 Provides a plethora of information on exercise and cardiovascular health benefits to all ages. Good ideas on promotions for your school. Table tents and handouts are available.
  • Sports, Cardiovascular and Wellness Nutrition (SCAN) www.scandpg.org SCAN is a Practice Group of the American Dietetic Association. The website provides information on sports nutrition, wellness and eating disorders; in addition to information on meetings, research and educational materials. This is a great site for those who are looking to network with others in the field, as well as those just starting out in the sports nutrition field.
  • University of Illinois Cooperative Extension http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/hsnut/ Good website with accurate information. Provides a very easy to understand sports nutrition guide and several handouts that you can download at no cost. Some of the content is geared towards the younger athlete but can be easily adapted for collegiate athletes.
  • University of Arizona Cooperative Extension http://ag.arizona.edu/nsc/new/sn/index.htm Great website with free easy to read handouts on sports nutrition. They also provide a sports nutrition manual for a fee.
  • Sport Science http://www.sportsci.org Good site if you are looking for sports nutrition research information.
  • American College of Sports Medicine http://www.acsm.org Good reliable information for those who work with the active population. You do need to pay a fee to review their information.
  • Nancy Clark, R.D. www.nancyclarkrd.com Valid sports nutrition information for athletes of all ages and sports. She is the pioneer of sports nutrition and continues to lead the way with excellent resources that you can purchase to help you educate clients or students who are active.
