Policy and Enforcement
The Policy and Enforcement group reviews campus and community regulations around alcohol possession and use, recommends changes and advocates for consistent enforcement. Activities and accomplishments include:
- Roundtable discussions for municipal and campus officials, beverage industry leaders, judicial system representatives and local legislators. Meetings generated ideas for model lease agreements, communications strategies, bylaw changes and more.
- Hosting Attorney Peter Lake, author of The Rights and Responsibilities of the Modern University and a nationally-known consultant on higher education law and alcohol. Lake visited campus, reviewed judicial policies and processes, and met with stakeholders to share best practices.
- Support for recent changes to the town of Hadley’s open container and keg bylaws.
- Review of outdoor advertising promoting alcohol to students.
- Influencing strengthened alcohol policies for UMass Amherst residence halls.
- Addition of a required alcohol education course for first-year students and implementation of BASICS, an alcohol intervention program serving both mandated and self-referred students.
